The organisation of the PPP World Championships in Wels is in the hands of PPP Austria, but without the support of an efficient local table tennis club, such a tournament would not be possible.
This club is SPG Felbermayr Wels, the most successful club in the province of Upper Austria. Since 2005, the team has played in the 1st Bundesliga, where it has been champion three times and cup winner twice. The biggest international successes include reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2019 and the final of the Europe League in 2021. In the meantime, even the 2nd team with mostly junior players also plays in the 1st Bundesliga. Currently, 10 men’s teams take part in the league games, as well as numerous youth teams. The home ground of SPG Felbermayr Wels is the Vogelweide sports hall at Porzellangasse 44, only 2.5 kilometres away from the Wels Exhibition Centre.
The sporting director and coach of the 1st team, David Huber, was the initiator of PPP Austria’s bid with Wels to host this World Cup a year ago. He had already led some training camps with Parkinson’s athletes and got to know the 1st chairwoman of PPP Austria, Hermine Hofner. Since October 2022, the club has also been the first base of PPP Austria and has held various training courses. In addition to David Huber, chairman Gerhard Demelbauer is also heavily involved in the organisation of the World Cup, and both are supported by numerous club members.
